Before you read any further you must know one thing – you do not need an expensive camera to take awesome photographs. This is important so let me repeat, you do not need an expensive camera to take awesome photographs. I guess I should also point out that having an expensive camera doesn't guarantee awesome photographs. That said, if you’ve maxed out the performance of your point-and-shoot and you’re ready to take your photography to the next level, the gear listed on this page should help you get there.
Since launching MacroMutt I have come into contact with many, many dog photographers. While looking at their gear there was a clear trend. Dog photographers prefer Canon. I lack the expertise to tell you why this is the case, however, it’s the reason why there are no other brand of SLR cameras or lenses listed on this page.
Here is some of the equipment you may find in a professional dog photographer’s bag.
Camera Bodies:
Canon EOS 5D Mark II
Canon EOS 5D
Canon EOS 50D
Canon EOS 40D
Canon EOS Rebel XSi
Lenses:
Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM
Canon EF 85mm f1.2L II USM
Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM
Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM
Canon EF 20mm f/2.8 USM Wide Angle
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Telephoto
The links above all go to Amazon, however, there are many places to purchase your equipment. You may also want to check eBay, Calumet, and/or your local photography shop.

I am a Pet Photographer, and yes, I shoot Canon too! You have a great list of lenses here, but I'd like to add one I use, that I love, and highly recommend. It's the Canon 85mm f/1.8. For approximately $400, this lens is VERY close to the 85 1.2L you have listed, at less than 1/4 of the price! I also recommend the Canon 70-200 f/4 IS telephoto, which is less expensive than it's f2.8 big brother, and MUCH lighter.
This is a great site you have here, and a fabulous resource. Thank you!
